Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was an American artist best known for his Combines (1954-1964), a series of multimedia artworks which combined painting and sculpture. In addition to painting and sculpture, Rauschenberg was experienced in photography, printmaking, and performance. Using found objects and printed media, Rauschenberg’s experimental techniques brought eclectic materials together to create unexpected and multifaceted compositions, allowing viewers to continuously find new ways to perceive and interpret the work. Rauschenberg’s career spanned six decades, during which he earned awards such as the International Grand Prize in Painting at the 32nd Venice Biennale in 1964, and the National Medal of Arts in 1993.
