Richard Estes is an American painter best known as a pioneer of the Photorealist movement. His work has been exhibited by institutions like the Museum of Modern Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Art Institute of Chicago, from which he was a graduate. Estes’ paintings of urban spaces emphasize their geometric angles, unoccupied space, and highly reflective services, elevating a sense of the uncanny in these highly-constructed spaces. Storefronts, public transportation, and open sidewalks are elevated by his attention to detail, allowing the viewer to linger on perspectives of the city that they might otherwise not be able to see, or even notice.
