Richard Diebenkorn was born April 22, 1922 in Portland, Oregon and grew up in San Francisco. He attended Stanford University in 1940, where he studied art with Victor Arnautoff and Daniel Mendelowitz, served in the Marines from 1943 to 1945, and studied art at the University of New Mexico from 1950 to 1952. Taking his cue from the Abstract Expressionist movement that had developed in the 1940s, Diebenkorn developed his own personal style of painting. While living in Berkeley in the 1950s and 1960s, he produced figurative paintings —usually landscapes of Northern California— which would later develop into abstract compositions, notably his Ocean Park series. From 1967 to 1973, Diebenkorn taught at UCLA, and had by then distinguished himself as a second-generation abstract expressionist. Today, Diebenkorn's paintings remain in museums in Baltimore, Chicago, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Washington DC. He died in Berkeley in 1993.
