RETNA is the pseudonym of Marquis Lewis, a contemporary graffiti artist known for his distinct hieroglyphic-esque typographic style. He developed this style by pulling from the Gothic Blackletter typeface, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Arabic, and Hebrew calligraphy, as well as traditional street-based graffiti. He began his career in the 1990s, and as a teenager was a part of the Los Angeles mural scene, where he developed his intricate linework techniques. His work can be seen in his collaborations with brands like Louis Vuitton, Nike, and Chanel; sets designed for the Washington National Opera and San Francisco Opera; and even a Justin Bieber album cover.
