John Baldessari was born June 17, 1931 in National City, California. Throughout the 1950s, he earned a BA and MA from San Diego State College, and briefly attended UC Berkeley, UCLA, and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Beginning in 1968, he taught at the art department at UC San Diego. Baldessari has gained a reputation as a conceptual artist, often turning everyday imagery on its head. Among his notable works are paintings that feature nothing more than lines of text against a blank background, portraits of human figures with fields of color supplanting certain body parts, photographs containing large painted dots or swirls, and compositions that juxtapose photography with ironic text captions.
