Fernando Botero is a Colombian figurative artist best known for his signature “Boterismo” style, defined by subjects with exaggerated volume, rounded edges, simplified texture, and almost geometric proportions. Of his style, Botero has been quoted saying, "An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it." Botero creates paintings and sculptures which range in subject matter from daily life in Columbia, reimaginings of famous works from art history, and political criticism. His work has been exhibited internationally and is collected by major institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museo Botero in Bogotà, which is dedicated to the artist and his work.
