David Hockney was born July 9, 1937 in Bradford, England. He studied art at Bradford College and at the Royal College of Art in London. Arguably the best-known British artist of his generation, Hockney achieved fame by his mid-twenties as a leading pop artist. This was likely due to his liberal use of color and unique subject matter, which included ocean waves, trees, beach furniture, and plantlife. He was the subject of a 1973 documentary by Jack Hazan called A Bigger Splash —so named for Hockney's affinity for swimming pools as a subject in his paintings. Although Hockney's is known primarily for his paintings, he is a talented printmaker, and has produced editions of lithographs, etchings, aquatints, and even computer-generated drawings since the early 1960s.
