Damien Steven Hirst is a British artist, entrepreneur and art collector. He is the most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists, who dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s. He is internationally renowned for his "spinning" and "spot" paintings, as well as for his notorious installations featuring dead animals preserved in formaldehyde. In September 2008, he took the unprecedented step of selling a complete show, Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, at a Sotheby's auction, raising £111 million and breaking the record for a one-artist auction. Most recently Hirst's representation of the British Union Flag formed the arena centerpiece for the closing ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Hirst continues his work as a painter and curator and is reportedly Britain's wealthiest living artist.
