Rafa Macarron was born in 1981 in Madrid, Spain, where he continues to live and work today. A former physiotherapist, he is a self-taught artist who uses his anatomical knowledge to create exaggerated body shapes that challenge artistic convention and traditional academic ideas.
Macarron has a deep knowledge of art history which he utilizes to contextualize post-war Spanish masters in his characteristic style. He was inspired by artists who explore tensions between format, scale, and color, such as Joan Miro and those from the Abstract Expressionism movement. Macarron also takes inspiration from the magical narrative he creates with his children, and his process is led by intuition and experimentation with a range of materials such as acrylic, gouache, oils, pencils, markers, aerosol sprays, aluminum and PVC.
