Victor Vasarely was born Vasarhelyi Gyozo on April 9, 1906 in Pecs, Hungary. After studying medicine briefly at Eotvos Lorand University, Vasarely pursued painting at the Podolini-Volkmann Academy. In 1930, he moved to Paris to work as a graphic designer for various advertising agencies. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Vasarely experimented with numerous visual effects, particularly the contrast between solid colors at opposite ends of the spectrum, the use of geometric patterns, and the use of color and geometric patterns together in creating optical illusions. By the 1950s, Vasarely had distinguished himself by developing an abstract, geometric artform that would come to be known as Op-Art. Today, Vasarely's works are in numerous museums throughout France and Hungary and are included in exhibitions throughout the world. He died in 1997 in Paris.
