Ugo Rondinone is a Swiss artist whose diverse body of work includes immersive installations and monumental sculptures as well as paintings, drawings, and photography. A major theme in his work is contrast, as he uses various materials, color palettes, and subject matter to explore the differences between natural and artificial, day and night, and joy and sadness. Among Rondinone’s most iconic pieces are his “Rocks” sculptures, which are inspired by naturally-occurring geological formations as well as the traditional practice of rock balancing, and are painted in bright, fluorescent colors. His work has been featured in exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Bass Museum, and the palais de Tokyo, among others, and frequently sells for six figures at auction.
