Susumu Kamijo was born in 1975 in Nagano, Japan, and moved to the United States at the age of 16. Kamijo received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Oregon in 2000, followed by a MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Washington in 2002. Early in his career, Kamijo experimented with the distortion of colors and shapes and the abstraction of animals and human faces, which has evolved into the quick-dry vinyl paintings that he is now known for. Since 2014, Kamijo has been producing drawings and paintings of poodles in a playful, meditative, “quick resolution” style that aims to capture authenticity. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, Kamijo has exhibited both nationally and internationally at various renowned galleries in New York, Korea, Belgium, Japan, California, and Florida.
