Robert Longo was born on January 7, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. He studied sculpture and drawing at the University of North Texas and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He eventually received a BFA from Buffalo State College in 1975, where artist Cindy Sherman was a classmate.Longo came to prominence in the early 1980s with his 'Men in the Cities' series —a sequence of large-scale drawings depicting formally-dressed men and women in contorted poses. Many of these drawings were used in advertising, album covers, and other forms of commercial art throughout that decade.Since then, Longo's work has been given retrospectives at museums in Chicago, Hartford, Houston, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Nice, and Tokyo.
