Nicole Wittenberg was born in San Francisco in 1979 and received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003. While in school, Wittenberg made drawings from slow-motion videos, life models, and photographs in an attempt to create “lifelike” paintings and drawings that evoke an immersive feeling of singular movement.
Recently, Wittenberg has applied this observation-based approach to landscapes and portraits of nature. Wittenberg is dedicated to trusting her eyes, even when reality contrasts how she thinks something should look, in order to reveal the extravagant beauty of the world. She claims that her work is about “sensation – the feeling of people, places, and things.”
Wittenberg has exhibited across the United States, and internationally in Vienna, Austria. Her works are included in permanent collections at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, among others. Wittenberg currently lives and works in Chinatown, New York City.
