James Rosenquist (1933-2017) was an American artist known as a major figure in the Pop Art movement. With a background in sign painting, Rosenquist brought both his technique and knowledge of commercial art to the movement. His murals, paintings, and prints seamlessly blend cultural icons, everyday objects, and the appealing visual language of advertising with elements of Surrealism, emphasizing the overwhelming nature of modern media culture. His work has been exhibited internationally, and is collected by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, and the Guggenheim Museum.
